Donatella Versace has revealed her daughter Allegra is battling anorexia. The head of the Italian fashion house spoke out today to temper persistent rumours that her rake-thin 20-year-old daughter was 'barely hanging to life'.


Allegra - who inherited half the Versace label, worth some £150 million, on her 18th birthday - has long been rumoured to have fallen victim to the condition. Photographs have recently shown her looking painfully thin, with a gaunt expression on her face and clearly visible bone structure.

Donatella, and Allegra's father Paul Beck, released a joint statement which read: "Our daughter, Allegra has been battling anorexia, a very serious disease for many years. She is receiving the best medical care possible to help overcome this illness and is responding well.

“As parents, we are doing our best to protect our daughter. However, due to numerous media reports, we want to let everyone know that we appreciate their concern for Allegra, and we ask that her privacy be respected at this time."

A spokeswoman for the fashion house said Allegra was living at home in the United States where she is a student, and not in hospital, as some reports had suggested.

Allegra's family has had its share of problems in recent years. Two years ago, her mother went into rehab for cocaine addition. At the time it was said that she was labouring under the strain of running the family business.

Donatella, who counts Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley and the Beckhams among her friends, inherited control of Versace when her brother Gianni was shot dead on the doorstep of his Miami mansion in 1997 by gay serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

Reports in Italy yesterday said that Allegra was receiving treatment in a specialised clinic while earlier this week Italian internet chat rooms said that Allegra's weight had dropped to just 32 kilos.

Allegra has been studying fashion in New York since 2004 and was doted on by her murdered uncle Gianni Versace who called her 'my little princess.'

He left her 50 per cent of the £300 million fashion empire as well as magnificent properties in Milan and on Lake Como which she inherited two years ago on her 18th birthday.

The rest of the company is split between Donatella and Gianni's other brother Santos. Her first official act after her 18th birthday was to abstain from acting.

She elected not to sign off on the company's unimpressive 2003 figures. Industry analysts decoded this inaction from every possible angle, finally deciding that doing nothing meant that she was a very smart girl indeed.

The latest news of Allegra's illness came just days after the actress and model Olivia Newton-John revealed her only daughter Chloe, 21, was also battling the disease.

Newton-John said Chloe's condition spiralled out of control 18 months ago when her mother's long-term boyfriend, Patrick McDermott, disappeared during a fishing trip and had not been seen since.
