Versace proves you can be too rich and too thin.
She was born into the fabulous wealth of the Versace family but last week it was revealed she has anorexia. The fashion industry gave her everything, but some say it is also to blame

Whether she wanted it or not, Allegra Versace has always had a front row seat in the lives of the super-rich and ultra-thin. As the niece of Gianni Versace, the fabulously extravagant designer, the world was her catwalk from day one.
So if anyone knows whether you really can never be too rich or too thin, it’s Allegra. And the evidence is that you can certainly be too thin, and possibly because you are too rich.
In fashion circles Allegra’s worryingly sinewed appearance has long been a taboo topic, talked about only in whispers for fear of upsetting the powerful Versace machine. Rumours about her condition were confined to the internet.
One discussion board entry in 2004 began: “The poor girl looks so bad I almost didn’t want to post this, but politely ignoring the situation isn’t going to make it go away. Forget eating a sandwich, she looks like she needs an IV [intravenous drip].”
Another posted last year read: “Somebody feed Allegra Versace. That poor thing is skeletal. She needs help (and a cheese-burger) right quick!”
Last week the worries finally spilt into the mainstream media, spurring the family to make a public statement. No, Allegra is not in hospital, it said. She is living at a private address and her health is stable.
But her mother Donatella publicly admitted for the first time that Allegra “has been battling anorexia, a very serious disease, for many years”.
The family is understandably keen to protect Allegra, 20, and last week threatened legal action against anyone publishing certain pictures of her. But her position within one of the iconic fashion houses is hard to ignore: it throws a stark light on the debate over “size zero” ultra-thin models.
Her sad plight encapsulates the dilemma faced by the fashion industry, which flaunts thinness as the holy grail, yet flinches from confronting its dark side.
LEGEND has it that Donatella was at work until half an hour before she gave birth to Allegra and within days was taking her baby daughter to fashion shows.
The girl grew up surrounded by objects of art and people of beauty. Her uncle Gianni’s magnificent homes included one in Milan with “leopard-covered walls and leopard-swagged curtains”. His villa on Lake Como was adorned with 18th-century paintings, red marble baths and a crystal chandelier that had once hung in the Russian imperial palace in St Petersburg.
Allegra’s mother, who worked in the business and had married a model called Paul Beck, naturally wanted the best for her daughter. “My mom dressed me in silk to go to elementary school,” Allegra recently revealed in a rare public utterance. “In kindergarten, they sent me home because I couldn’t do finger painting in my dress.” She called Elton John “uncle”, took catwalk advice from Naomi Campbell and dancing lessons with Maurice Bejart, the French choreographer. By eight she was on the catwalk herself.
All the while she was the beloved “little princess” of Gianni, the style emperor famed for Liz Hurley’s safety-pin dress. In an e-mail interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera last year, Allegra said: “He always wanted me to be with him, in the catwalk rehearsals, on the sets of advertising campaigns. There was a special complicity between us.”
She was, said Santo, the elder brother of Gianni, “the daughter [Gianni] never had”.
Living up to such standards is not easy — and experts say the “impossible” ideals projected by fashion and Hollywood are part of the cause of eating disorders.
“There’s a combination of factors usually,” said Dr Nihara Krause, a consultant clinical psychologist in London specialising in eating disorders. “There’s all the socio-cultural stuff and the media portrayal of thinness, and the person themselves and their temperament, things like perfectionism and self-esteem.”
Many young girls succumb either to bulimia — where they eat only to purge themselves later with laxatives or by vomiting — or to anorexia, a condition in which they starve their bodies of calories.
Another trigger, said Krause, can be childhood trauma. “One potential factor is early experiences that could be perceived as traumatic, which usually involves a sense of loss of control,” she said. Victims may feel that the only things they can control are their diet and body image.
Allegra certainly suffered the most shocking of traumas. When she was just 11, her beloved uncle was shot dead outside his mansion in Miami. She learnt of his murder from a television report before Donatella could break the news herself.
Allegra was devastated. Giusi Ferre, a former friend of Gianni’s and a Milan fashion writer, recalled: “I’ll always remember that during the funeral service at Milan’s cathedral, with Princess Diana and Elton John there, Allegra had her head backwards and she was crying so much that the tears ran down into her mouth.”
Though she was not yet a teenager, she was the principal beneficiary of Gianni’s will, inheriting his 50% stake in the family company. Her mother owned 20% and Santo 30%. It brought Allegra riches and a hefty responsibility. She is reported to have said after learning of her inheritance: “Why did Gianni choose me?”
Last week an Italian newspaper claimed that Donatella had told friends: “My brother died in July; in September Allegra stopped eating.”
Donatella is understood to have sought help for Allegra from David Shaffer, a prominent New York child psychiatrist and the estranged husband of Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, who was the inspiration for the hit film The Devil Wears Prada.
Donatella had her own problems — mainly cocaine — to contend with, perhaps compounding the pressures on Allegra. “Theirs is a very intense and affectionate relationship, but the cocaine addiction was difficult for Allegra because she realised the weaknesses of her mother,” said Ferre. “A child wants its parents to be strong, to show the way.”
In 2004 Donatella checked into rehab. Nor did Santo escape unscathed by Gianni’s death: he suffered depression.
It’s possible there was a physiological link running through all these woes. As Krause said: “There is some literature on the biological causes [of anorexia]…on bio-chemical imbalance in families, usually revolving around serotonin [a key chemical in the brain]. And certainly there is quite a strong link of eating disorders running in families or of some vulnerability to dependency.”
Donatella conquered her addiction and helped the fashion company to claw its way out of a financial abyss. She has proved as brilliant at manipulating the media as her brother. In February there was a vintage Versace party in Los Angeles, with Elton John and Guns N’ Roses in concert, and 700 guests. But Allegra was absent. The celebrity industry is still uncertain how to balance its adulation of beauty against addiction to thinness.
LAST year two models died from anorexia and in September the Spanish authorities banned the use of models with a “body mass index” of less than 18. The BMI (calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres) generally regarded as preferable is between 18.5 and 25.
The Italian authorities have opted for a voluntary code of conduct, requiring models to have a health certificate. But Stefano Gabbana, of the label Dolce & Gabbana, told the Italian Vanity Fair: “I’ve heard all the designers oppose this, and I’m prepared to bet we will see the same skinny models on the catwalks.”
The British Fashion Council last week batted the issue into the hands of an independent inquiry. And British model agencies such as Storm say they are already well aware of the dangers. “At Storm we are concerned about everyone’s welfare, from diet to going out, to use of the internet,” said Paula Karaiskos, a spokeswoman for the agency. “Sarah Doukas [the founder] is a mother with three children, so she’s very hands on with this.”
Others point out that it’s not just the fashion industry that sets the thinness standard. Diminutive celebrities such as Nicole Richie influence millions of young women. “I know I’m too thin right now, so I wouldn’t want any girl looking at me and saying, ‘That’s what I want to look like’,” Richie said last year.
Will Donatella’s belated admission about Allegra’s problems help to change attitudes? Might it even help Allegra? Some in the industry think so. |

Versace heiress Allegra Versace is looking healthy and gorgeous just 10-months after entering an inpatient facility for severe anorexia.
The 21-year-old, who was reportedly near death at 70 lbs. a year ago, showed off her natural model good looks today when she made a rare public appearance at the fall/winter 2009 Gianni Versace show in Milan.
Last year, mom Donatella confirmed that the college girl was being devoured by the eating disorder after photos surfaced of the dangerously skinny girl attached to naso-gastric feeding tubes.
"My daughter is very ill. Anorexia is consuming her and we are very worried. However, the doctors are doing all they can to snatch her away from this cruel disease and we have faith in them," the 53-year-old fashion designer said at the time.
Now that Allegra appears in good healthy, should we expect her to be playing a more active role in luxury fashion company that bares her name?
When her uncle was murdered a decade ago (Allegra was just 11), Gianni bequeathed 50% of his share of the fashion company to his favorite niece. When she turned 18, she received the primary inheritance of about $700 million.
